Our Beginnings

The National Consortium for African American Children, Inc. (NCAAC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in the nation’s capital. NCAAC enjoys a historical distinction regarding its formation and ongoing legacy of service. The organization was created in 1992 as a special initiative of the Congressionally-established, National Commission to Prevent Infant Mortality. This prestigious commission was co-chaired by the Late Honorable Lawton Chiles, Former Governor of Florida, and the Honorable Mike Espy, Former US Secretary of Agriculture.  It’s nearly 100-member network participated in a Congressional Briefing to call national attention to the persistent and disparate death rates among black babies in their first year of life. NCAAC transitioned from a special initiative into an independent nonprofit organization in 1995.
